Learn to Jive Dance - Dance Classes & Lessons

The Latin dance style Jive originated in the United States among the African-American community in the early 1930s. Highlighted in the year 1934 by Cab Calloway, jive is the lively and uninhibited variation of Jitterbug, a Swing dance form. It was in the 1940s that jive became a major hit in the United States and got influenced by the Boogie, Rock & Roll, African/American Swing, and Lindyhop. One of the five International Latin dances, jive is performed with a lot of energy, with the legs portraying a pumping action. In jive, the count begins with the rock step, which is counted "1, 2." The two triple steps are counted "3 and 4" and "5 and 6." Another interesting thing about jive is that in competition, it is danced at 176 beats per minute.

Simple, yet energetic and jovial, jive is easy to learn. The prime thing that beginners have to keep in their mind is to become familiar with the rhythm of the music. Additionally, rather than the melody, the drum provides the beat, so it is important to listen to the drum line. What’s also significant to note is that jive, being an exciting partner dance would require you to take along a partner to jive dancing classes. A dance style that allows you to indulge in fun while being social at the same time, jive is the fastest of the Latin dances and will fulfil the need of a great cardio workout. So, if you stay concerned about remaining in great shape, you won’t have to any more.
